Tracing the Roots of the Carriage Garage Door

The carriage garage door style is a blast from the past. The humble beginning of the carriage house can be traced way back.

High-society and Horse Manure

Carriage garages were originally used to store horses and carriages. As cars were becoming abundant in society, people decided to store their cars along with their horses in that carriage house. Most car owners at that time belonged to the upper-class so obviously they did not like their cars smelling like horse manure. They then thought of building separate storages for their automobiles.

Storage for Everyone

Some people built separate parking areas to be used to store automobiles. This way, stench from horse manure would not permeate the interior of their cars. These storage areas can be compared to our present parking areas. Some were open to the public while others were privately-owned. Owners of the private parking areas would charge people if they parked their cars in the property.

Too Many Cars

A problem arose when their cars were becoming a common property. There was not enough space in the public or private garages to accommodate them all. People then thought of a solution to this problem.

Closer to Home

People then started building garages closer to their homes. They patterned these garages to the old carriage houses. This gave birth to the present-day garage as we know it.

From Barn Doors to Automatic Doors

The first garages used barn doors. Like any other constructed thing, innovations to make it better were non-stop. Today, the carriage garage door is made by manufacturers with different kinds of materials. They also offer numerous styles and designs and now, carriage garage doors can also be automated should owners want to have that feature.
